The history of Barrancos dates back to the 12th Century, a time when the Noudar fort was raised next to the Spanish border, between the river-banks of Ardila and Murtiga; Barrancos is a small town but one that has great traditions. It is protected by the National Ecological Reserve and the Natura Network, with a total area of 168 Km2 and around 2,000 inhabitants
The culture and tradition of the “Barranquenhos” has emerged as a result of the different peoples who have passed through the area, leaving profound marks in terms of its meticulous territorial organisation and most of all in relation to its vocal expression, with the characteristic “barranquenho” dialect. “A town like this cannot be “piquênu”” ! (note: “piquênu” is the local pronunciation of “pequeno” (small)).
